Here is an image before and after using Photoshop:

After:

For this image, I made it bigger, so that Jenn was the main focus of the image and not so much the background. I also made the image black and white so that it would stand out and the text on the front cover would stand out from the image.

Evalutation Question 1

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Conventions of a magazine are what is featured on the front cover of magazines, such as the masthead, main image and the cover lines. They exist to attract the audience and reader to purchase the magazine.

The genre of magazine I produced was that of the rock/ indie genre of music. I chose these genres as I am most familiar with these genres above all the other genres. The magazines I took influence from are those of Q and NME, as I felt that these were the magazines featured a similar genre of music to the ones that I was to produce. I also felt that both of these magazine's audiences were in the age range of which I had chosen, which was (14-21) as it seems that the images and text is aimed at a young adult audience.
Here are the front covers of the magazines that I took inspiration from:

Conventions of my frontcover:

I have included what you'd typically expect to find on a front cover, such as the masthead. The masthead on my magazine is where you would typically find it, which is at the top of the cover and covering a portion of the page. What I have done with the masthead is also have the first letter, which stands out the most, is have it coming off the page so it doesn't look all tidy and neat, which is what you'd expect from a magazine of the genre that I had chose.

Another thing which I have does is that the magazine's main audience is aimed at males between 14-21, and by having it at this, my main image of the front cover is of a young female which will appeal to the male audience, as the main image is also of subjective gaze.

Conventions of my contents page:

For my contents page, I have included a list of featured articles that will feautre within my magazine, as nealry all if not every magazine features this.

My contents page also contained a couple of images related to some of the articles in the magazine as this is fairly common in most magazines and helps build up the excitement to the pages.

Conventions of my double page spread:

For my double page spread, I have included what you would convetionally find on a double page spread, which is a main image, smaller image and text columns. However, for double page spreads, each one varies as the text and images are never in the same place, but the text is usually put into neat columns.

Contents page mock up

Contents page mock up

Like with the mock up of the front cover, I took an existing contents page and lowered it's opacity and then added my style to what my contents page would look like including images and text.

Front Cover mock up

mock up fc

I made a mock up of what my front cover would be like by using an existing cover and lowered its opacity so that it would be as visible as it first was. I then added things on top of the image that were in the style that I would be using.
